On 18th August, 1973, a young Mischa Maisky met Pablo Casals in Jerusalem. Casals was participating in the Israel Festival and agreed to listen to a promising young Maisky, who performed Bach’s Suite No. 2 for the Maestro. Sitting next to Casals was his wife, Marta; Issac Stern; Eugene Istomin and Schasha Schneider.
Maisky looks back to that day where, thanks to Casals, he learned that an artist’s duty is to communicate his own feelings and that Bach requires an eternal search for the aesthetic ideal.
After that meeting, Mischa Maisky conquered the world’s great auditoriums, becoming the greatest cellist of his generation and a legend.
Next Monday, 14th February, Maisky will revive the spirit of Pau Casals at the Palau de la Música Catalana performing Bach’s Suites.
