Standing ovations for Turandot at the Palau de la Música

The performances of Turandot at the Palau de la Música became one of those milestones that are only possible when ambition, commitment, and a deep connection with the audience come together. On the centenary of the opera’s premiere at La Scala in Milan, the Franz Schubert Filharmonia wished to join the celebration with its own production, becoming the only symphony orchestra in the world to commemorate this anniversary on such a scale.

Maestro Tomàs Grau delivered a clear and narrative reading of Puccini’s score, with special attention to the balance between sections, choirs, and soloists, as well as a refined treatment of textures and colours, which the orchestra sustained with great solidity.

Leading the cast, Lianna Haroutounian created a powerful and nuanced Turandot, capable of combining strength and sensitivity. Xavier Moreno gave a compelling performance as Calaf, culminating in a highly accomplished Nessun dorma. Carolina López Moreno brought to life a delicate and expressive Liù, while David Cervera conveyed both humanity and fragility as Timur. The ministers —Carles Pachon (Ping), Andrés Moreno (Pang), and Marc Sala (Pong)— stood out for their chemistry and balance, while the distinguished presence of the great Raúl Giménez as Altoum completed a truly outstanding cast.

The Orfeó Català and the Cor Infantil de l’Orfeó Català rounded off the musical impact with solid and deeply moving vocal performances.

Jordi Gastó’s staging, intelligent and elegant, adapted naturally to the unique space of the Palau, in a production focused on the essential human conflict at the heart of the drama.

Bringing Turandot to the Palau before nearly 4,000 people has been a shared challenge that will forever remain in our hearts.
