Ton Koopman

Conductor

Ton Koopman is one of the world’s foremost authorities on historically informed performance and a key figure in the revival of the Baroque repertoire, particularly the music of Johann Sebastian Bach.

Born in the Netherlands, he studied organ, harpsichord and musicology in Amsterdam. In 1979, he founded the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra and, in 1992, the Amsterdam Baroque Choir, ensembles with which he has developed an extraordinary international career and an extensive discography.

As a guest conductor, he has worked with some of the world’s leading orchestras, including the Berliner Philharmoniker, New York Philharmonic, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Boston Symphony Orchestra and San Francisco Symphony Orchestra. His repertoire extends from the Baroque to the early Romantic composers, with a particular focus on Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert and Mendelssohn.

His work as a performer, scholar and teacher has been recognised with numerous international distinctions. Ton Koopman has also collaborated with the Franz Schubert Filharmonia as a guest conductor.
