Paul Agnew is an acclaimed British conductor and tenor, particularly associated with seventeenth- and eighteenth-century repertoire and historically informed performance.
Educated at Magdalen College, Oxford, he began a close collaboration with William Christie and Les Arts Florissants in 1992. As a tenor, he became a leading interpreter of the French Baroque repertoire and has also worked with conductors including Marc Minkowski, Ton Koopman, John Eliot Gardiner, Philippe Herreweghe and Emmanuelle Haïm.
From 2007 onwards, he increasingly developed his career as a conductor and, between 2011 and 2015, led an ambitious project devoted to the complete madrigals of Monteverdi with Les Arts Florissants, resulting in nearly one hundred concerts and several internationally acclaimed recordings.
His dual experience as singer and conductor brings a particular sensitivity to the voice, phrasing and text in his interpretations.
Paul Agnew has also collaborated with the Franz Schubert Filharmonia as a guest conductor.
