Clara-Jumi Kang

Clara-Jumi Kang, born to Korean parents and raised in Germany, is internationally recognized for her musicality and virtuosity. Throughout her career, she has received major awards, including first prizes at the Indianapolis, Sendai and Seoul International Violin Competitions.

Recent and upcoming engagements include appearances at festivals such as the BBC Proms, the Hollywood Bowl with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and her debut at the Salzburg Festival. She has collaborated with orchestras such as the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, the Munich Philharmonic, the Rotterdam Philharmonic and the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra, as well as ensembles including the New York Philharmonic, the NHK Symphony Orchestra and the BBC Philharmonic.

Since her debut at the age of five with the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra, she has worked with distinguished conductors such as Paavo Järvi, Daniel Harding, Jaap van Zweden and Lahav Shani. In 2012, she was named one of the “100 most influential people in Korea” by The Dong-A Times, and has received further distinctions including the Daewon Music Award and the Kumho Musician of the Year title.

Her discography includes recordings for Decca featuring works by Schubert and Ysaÿe, as well as an album dedicated to Brahms and Schumann. She has also released the complete cycle of Beethoven violin sonatas, widely praised by critics.

A passionate chamber musician, she collaborates with artists such as Janine Jansen, Gidon Kremer and Mischa Maisky. She studied in Germany, at The Juilliard School in New York, and in Korea, and currently plays the 1702 “Thunis” Stradivarius.
