Mark Padmore

Mark Padmore is one of the most distinguished tenors on the international stage, particularly acclaimed for his interpretations of the Baroque and Classical repertoire. His performances of Bach’s Passions have received exceptional recognition, notably his role as the Evangelist in the St Matthew Passion and the St John Passion with the Berlin Philharmonic under Simon Rattle, in staged productions by Peter Sellars.

In the current season, he once again performs the Evangelist in the St Matthew Passion with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra conducted by Simon Rattle, as well as with the Turku Philharmonic. He also undertakes a tour of Japan, including appearances at the Le Pont International Music Festival and at Topan Hall with guitarist Yasuji Ohagi, culminating in performances of Britten’s Nocturne with the Gunma Symphony Orchestra. This same repertoire is also presented with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and the Freiburg Chamber Orchestra.

In opera, he has appeared in productions such as Il ritorno d’Ulisse at the Grand Théâtre de Genève, Death in Venice and Billy Budd by Britten at the Royal Opera House in London, as well as in the role of the Evangelist at the Glyndebourne Festival. He has also performed leading roles in contemporary works by Harrison Birtwistle at the Aldeburgh Festival.

He has been artist-in-residence at London’s Wigmore Hall (2021/22), the Berlin Philharmonic (2017/18) and the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra (2016/17), consolidating a career defined by excellence and interpretative depth.
