Rafael Aguirre is one of Spain’s most internationally acclaimed guitarists. Winner of thirteen first prizes at international competitions, including the prestigious Francisco Tárrega International Guitar Competition, he has performed in nearly fifty countries and at venues including Carnegie Hall in New York, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the Musikverein in Vienna and the Royal Albert Hall in London.

Born in Málaga, he made his orchestral debut at the age of sixteen and later studied in Germany with Joaquín Clerch and at London’s Royal Academy of Music with Michael Lewin.

With a repertoire encompassing more than thirty concertos for guitar and orchestra, Aguirre combines the classical tradition with an openness to other musical languages, ranging from flamenco and Spanish and Latin American popular music to film music.

He has collaborated with conductors including Leonard Slatkin, Jesús López Cobos, Juanjo Mena, Karina Canellakis and Gabriel Bebeșelea, and has also appeared as a soloist with the Franz Schubert Filharmonia.
