We invite you to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the premiere of the Anthem for the United Nations with an event-concert at the Palau de la Música Catalana. The Franz Schubert Philharmonic and the Orfeó Català, conducted by Maestro Tomàs Grau, will perform the Hymn that the United Nations commissioned from Pau Casals, as well as the Concerto for two violins in D minor by Bach and the Hymn to the ‘Joy of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony.
This year marks the 50th anniversary of the premiere of the Anthem for the United Nations with lyrics by the poet W.H. They hear that Secretary General U-Thant commissioned Pau Casals. At the same ceremony, on October 24, 1971, the United Nations Peace Medal was awarded to Pau Casals, at the headquarters of the General Assembly in New York. His speech of gratitude, improvised and emotional became a historical moment of reference, starring a universal Catalan.
Casals defended peace as a priority goal. He contrasted music, which expressed the good and the best of humanity, with war, which for him was the worst. After World War II he protested in silence that the Allies maintained the dictatorship of General Franco. And in this context of the Cold War and the nuclear threat, he mobilized for peace and democracy until the end of his life.
