The art of strings

The Franz Schubert Filharmonia offered a concert of great musical depth at the Palau de la Música, with the inspired direction and interpretation from the position of first violin by Vlad Stanculeasa.

We began the concert with Mendelssohn's Octet for strings op. 20, a brilliant work composed when he was only 16 years old, which the composer himself insisted should be performed with an orchestral, rather than a chamber, sound. The orchestra highlighted this premise thanks to the virtuoso sound of the double bass, which reinforced the low registers and added symphonic depth. The first movement, full of youthful energy, shone for its precision, while the scherzo captivated with its lightness and agility. The final Presto closed the work with an explosion of virtuoso energy.

In the second part, the Tchaikovsky's Serenade for strings op. 48 stood out for its balance between elegance and emotion. The solemn Pezzo in forma di sonatina that opens the score offered a noble and organic dialogue between the sections. The Waltz flowed with delicacy and charm, while the Élégie moved us with exquisite control of tempo and balance of colors. The apotheosic Tema Russo brought the finale to a lively and sophisticated conclusion.

Finally, the musicians of the Franz Schubert Filharmonia gave a wonderful Sibelius encore that stopped time.
