Programme notes
Referents and reason for inspiration for generations of musicians and music lovers, Beethoven and Shostakovich are authentic pillars of the musical tradition of which we are part. Season after season there are few orchestras and programmes that escape the appeal (also understood as a challenge) that means programming one of the great works of the universal repertoire. We refer, no doubt, to the Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3 in E flat major, op. 55, Eroica, considered by the experts as the symphony that marked the transition from Classicism to full Romanticism, allows us to welcome comme il faut to one of the most powerful musical voices that our country has given. Salvador Mas, an authentic specialist in Beethoven, has conducted everything by showing a deep knowledge of his language.
The conductor from Barcelona starts a three-year residency with the Orchestra as Principal Guest Conductor and will collaborate with the current Resident Artist, the cellist Lluís Claret. Both will offer us their version of Shostakovich’s Concerto No. 1 (also in E flat major, like Eroica). Catalan and global. Musicians and, above all, Music in capital letters.
