Programme notes

Piazzolla, Ginastera and Stravinsky did not conceive these works originally in the way they are currently interpreted. The Four Buenos Aires Seasons are individual tangos composed by the Argentine composer Astor Piazzolla between 1965 and 1970, and which the Russian composer Leonid Desyatnikov arranged to give him the shape of an orchestral suite establishing a link with the famous Four Seasons of Vivaldi. The versatile and meticulous violinist Leticia Moreno plays this work like nobody else, extracting all the nuances of each one of the seasons of the year.

Igor Stravinsky and Alberto Ginastera have in common that both made a suite of pieces from ballets of their own creation, coinciding in the plot (the triumph of love between two young people from different backgrounds). The influence of The Firebird, a work that established new musical patterns expanding the horizons of the dancers and impacting the public’s ears, is evident in the Estancia ballet suite. Although the atmosphere is very different (a fantasy story in Stravinsky, a story of gauchos in Ginastera) the rhythm is energetic and vigorous, and the scenes and characters are perfectly portrayed through the music.
