Programme notes

The Franz Schubert Filharmonia presents a proposal as unique as it is captivating: Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 4 in the delicate chamber orchestra version created by Erwin Stein in 1921. Led by Maria Florea, the orchestra will offer an intimate and revealing reading of this fascinating work.

In this essential version, the music preserves all of Mahler’s magic, yet transformed into a world of transparent and surprising nuances. The unmistakable opening, evoking a sleigh ride, opens the door to a bright universe full of melodic colors, culminating in the radiant voice of soprano Katja Maderer in the final movement, inspired by the poems of Des Knaben Wunderhorn.

A delicate and poetic musical experience that invites us to rediscover Mahler from an intense and deeply moving perspective. A unique opportunity to experience this symphonic gem in an intimate and exceptional format.
